‘Happiness is home-made’: The slogan on the blackboard at The Artisan Café in Wiri, South Auckland says it all. If you’re looking for delicious, fresh, seasonal food, this café is one to check out. The Artisan has three chefs, each specialising in a different food area: main menu, deli and patisserie.
It’s been three years since Sean Vo and his partner Trinh took over the café and customer numbers just keep growing. Sean puts this down to a hands-on approach and very friendly staff who ‘go the extra mile for the customer’. People keep coming back for the gorgeous food and, of course, the coffee.
Regular customers love the fact that specials at The Artisan change every day. Sean visits local farms and markets to buy the seasonal produce that features strongly across the menu. When asked to name a few of his customers’ favourites, Sean reels off a list of delicious-sounding meals:
Pork belly in a steamed bun with pickled cucumber, hoisin sauce, shallots, spring onions, chili sauce on the side; homemade potato rosti with field mushrooms cooked in thyme and cream, finished with a balsamic glaze and parmesan, served with wilted spinach and truffle oil and poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on the side. Breakfasts are also a winner at The Artisan, and there’s something for everyone: from buttermilk pancakes, creamy porridge with brown sugar or ‘Morning Glory’ — a paleo breakfast salad — to the full The Artisan Grill with eggs, pork sausage, streaky bacon, hash browns, mushrooms, grilled tomato and your choice of bread toasted.
Sean has a long relationship with Altura coffee and always buys and serves the award-winning Altitude blend. “Customers regularly comment on the smoothness of our coffee,” he says. “Our service is quick without being rushed – our baristas understand the importance of making sure the crema is velvety and smooth.”
