The Altura team is celebrating! Chris White, our master roaster and head honcho has just received the New Zealand Specialty Coffee Association’s first Outstanding Ongoing Contribution Award – recognising the long-lasting impact that his activities have had on the NZ coffee industry as a whole.
It’s no secret that Chris is passionate about bringing world-class barista skills to New Zealand. In his ‘spare time’ he has been promoting barista competitions at a national and global level for the past 16 years. The leadership provided by Chris and other members of the NZSCA has led to an unusually high caliber of baristas in our small corner of the earth. No surprise that our reputation overseas is for amazing coffee, scenery and rugby — although not always in that order. International visitors often comment on the fact that in New Zealand they can get a great coffee pretty much anywhere!
Chris has been a World Barista Championship judge for years. He is now a shadow WBC judge, responsible for upholding the standards of judging in the global competition and will be heading off to WBC 2016
in Dublin later this month.
Although he’s a humble kind of guy and doesn’t much like to talk about his achievements, you can tell that he’s touched by the award: “I’m honoured to receive the NZSCA award. Getting this kind of recognition from the coffee community is really awesome.”
